Welcome to Prevent Human Trafficking!

Our Mission: We are a Washington, D.C., based non-profit organization founded in 1999 working to build a bridge between Thailand and the United States to empower individuals, organizations and agencies to tackle the root causes of human trafficking through direct support, technical assistance - including transmedia to document, promote and raise support for key programs. Prevent Human Trafficking uses its expertise, networks to promote the work of best practice and inspire sustainable solutions in the anti-trafficking movement. We are also committed to cultivating the next generation of leaders in the field through our one-year intensive internship program, and annual anti-trafficking summer program in Thailand.

What is human trafficking?

Human Trafficking is a crime against humanity. It involves an act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring or receiving a man, woman or child through the use of force, fraud, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them for labor or sex trafficking. To learn more, please see the U.S. Department of State's annual Trafficking in Person's Report. Statistics on human trafficking vary wildly, and the methodologies are less than perfect. We as an organization do not promote any particular statistic for this reason. Also, this annual report generates controversy every year for it's tier ranking system of foreign government's efforts to combat human trafficking, so we advise people to keep these things in mind when reading this and other reports about the complex issue of human trafficking.

The problem

Each year, millions of men, women and children are victimized and exploited for labor and sexual purposes. Hoping for a better future for themselves and their families they are lured by false promises into a life of slavery and deprivation. Since our founding in 1999, our team has been working in South East Asia (now exclusively in Thailand) and the United States striving to bring prevent human trafficking before it begins - in order to combat this global crime against humanity. Our philosophy on prevention can be explained similar to the idea of "building a fence on the top of the hill instead of a hospital at the bottom."
